That can be a challenge in many parts of Italy. By law, Italian beaches are public land, but that doesn’t necessarily mean people can freely access them. The government has long given over the management of much of its 5,000-mile coastline to businesses that plant umbrellas and chairs in the sand almost up to the water and charge beachgoers to use them.

Human rights groups and Western governments say Iran’s judicial system is based on sham trials behind closed doors. A week earlier, Iran executed another man, Mohsen Shekari, for allegedly blocking a road in Tehran and stabbing a pro-government militia member who required stitches. Around a dozen others have been sentenced to death, according to human rights groups.
